If any of you have started planning your wedding, you might know that nothing is scarier than a 30 page checklist of all the tasks you need to complete before being deemed "properly prepared" for your wedding. Yes, weddings are a lot of work. And yes, there really IS a lot of planning involved. However, it is important to remember that you are marrying your fiance, not your list. Lists can be incredibly helpful in planning, but are not the end all be all of wedding planning. That being said, here is OUR list. Here are the areas of your wedding where you can really get creative, cut costs, and take advantage of DIY methods or use indie wedding crafters! Take a look at what we will be brining you in the months to come:

- Wedding clothes, or "attire". The dress, the shoes, the veil... most people think that you can only buy a wedding dress at a fancy boutique. Wrong! There are tons of resources for finding an alternative to a boutique-bought wedding dress. Cotton dresses, vintage dresses, handmade dresses, and other independent dressmakers would LOVE to make your look personal to you on your wedding day. Pictured above is a bolero by indie etsy seller TianaCHE, available from Tiana's Etsy Store.

- Jewelery. This is the easiest place to get creative with your wedding. So many online jewelers specialize in wedding jewelery. Craft fairs, design fairs and online venues like etsy.com are always available!

- Stationery. Stay tuned for some amazing choices in independent leterpress shops, etsy sellers, and other crafty, cost effective and GREEN ways to invite your guests, display menus, print programs, etc. Pictured above is one of my hand stamped invitations printed on FSC certified eco-friendly paper, available from Meantime Designs.

- Gifts. You do NOT need to give your bridesmaids bath crystals (Ok, so I did, but it was in conjunction with handmade earrings). Have fun with gift giving with some tips and new ideas!

- Photography. Make your wedding look like a million bucks by hiring a good photographer with a creative eye. We will be doing some local features where we highlight photographers from different areas and their unique and creative styles. All photographers we feature will be self employed, creative artists with a unique point of view.

- Music. Think fresh when it comes to song choice. I had no idea when I was planning my wedding that I did not have to use "here comes the bride" as I walked down the aisle. I am so glad I realized ahead of time that it was not necessary! Some people feel a connection to the song and if you do, by all means use it. But if not, find something that means more to you. We will be providing a list of alternative song choices along with where to find instrumental versions of your faves.

- Etc. Did I forget anything? Is there anything that you would like to see? Are you a vendor who thinks your wedding product would fit in here? Are you married and think that your photographer or florist was so amazing she should be mentioned? If so, let me know! We are always looking for new features!

Well, that's all for today. We can't wait to really get this blog moving! Till next time..

Twist on tradition - Indie cake toppers

Cake toppers. I didn't use them at my wedding, but had I seen these at the time, I may have changed my mind. This is a great example of something traditional with a modern, slightly eclectic spin!

I absolutely love this bird cake topper by Perch52, an etsy seller. Check out Perch's shop here:

If you are looking for something a bit more subtle, check out this gorgeous branch topper by Lint and Lavender, available here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/lintandlavender

Well, thats all for now. Till next time!

Welcome to the Indie Wedding!

Thanks for stopping by and checking out my blog!

If you are the kind of bride that I was, you want a wedding that expresses your relationship and your personality. You want something sophisticated, unique and special. You do not want to copy your best friends wedding, and you do not want to recreate your mother's wedding. Finally, you want to know that all of the above is do-able while staying within your budget. I know that this is a huge challenge, but with someone looking out for you, it CAN be done!

The term "Indie Wedding" can be interpreted in many ways and frankly, it can be a little bit intimidating. An indie wedding does not necessarily mean that the groomsmen have to wear chuck taylors, or that the bride is forbidden from wearing a white dress! There is nothing wrong with tradition. However, you should feel free to pick and choose the traditions that you want to incorporate into your wedding. Some weddings are pink and frilly, and some weddings are Halloween themed. However, most modern weddings fall somewhere in the middle. You don't need to choose one side. Instead, take a look at each component separately, investigate alternative options like using an independent vendor or trying to DIY and choose something that speaks to you.

This blog features ideas for the modern couple. We love independent vendors at all price points, businesses that are GREEN, new designers that give 110% to their work, and wedding ideas that will set you apart from the crowd. The Indie Wedding is classy, original thoughtful.

If you know of a great indie vendor who deserves recognition, or just want to drop me a line about wedding trends, your own wedding, or you have any questions, please feel free! This is a new blog and as it grows, I hope that you will help contribute with details from your own wedding!
